The Human Movement RG is dedicated to exploring the multilayered aspects of human movement, and to conducting innovative research as a tool for optimizing health, performance, motor skills acquisition, and physical functions throughout the lifespan.

The group also intends to explore human movement strategies that can manage musculoskeletal pain and prevent falls and injuries, as well as assess motor competence and physical fitness in school-aged children and adolescents to optimize their health.

In addition, it is equally important to focus on improving the quality of life and well-being of people with disabilities through the human movement approach. By exploring the intricacies of how we move, the Human Movement RG aims to unlock the potential for improving motor behavior and improving physical functionality for individuals at all stages of life.

It employs a multidisciplinary approach, integrating knowledge from biomechanics, physiology, neuroscience, physical education, psychology and rehabilitation sciences.

By fostering collaborations across these fields, the group is able to address complex questions about the human movement from multiple perspectives, leading to more comprehensive INSIGHTs and innovative solutions.

The knowledge generated by the RG can help improve new policies, clinical practices and individual decisions related to physical activity and health.

Therefore, these contributions have immense potential to positively influence individual health outcomes and represent a crucial step towards promoting healthier lifestyles and improving physical performance.

Finally, the main goal of the RG is to strengthen interdisciplinary research by building advanced investigative capacity among researchers at all levels.

Objectives

  • Investigate children and adolescents motor behavior;

  • Generate innovative knowledge on the integration of aging processes, functionality, health and movement;

  • Optimize the motor performance of individuals and prevent injuries in sports and work contexts.

PI: Fábio Flôres

The study and understanding of games based on the systematic observation of the behavior of players and teams has been developed over many years and research has sought to analyze multiple variables that affect sports performance. However, the amount of research carried out on Portuguese athletes is still limited, and there is a need to understand the various factors that influence performance to define strategies that optimize competitive performance. To analyze the sports performance of athletes from different sports disciplines.

PI: José Luís Sousa

The functional decline in this population affects the level of independence and quality of life of the elderly. It is, therefore, necessary to understand the level of health-related physical condition of the elderly to develop informed and more effective intervention models and strategic guidelines that contribute to improving functionality, with repercussions on the quality of life and independence of this population. Thus, the aim of this project is to verify the association between the components of health-related physical conditions and the quality of life of institutionalized elderly people and elderly people in the community.

PI: Alexandre Nunes

In Portugal, 37% of the population suffers from chronic low back pain (INE, 2019), representing high economic burdens and costs for the state. Despite major scientific advances in recent years, it is not yet known whether manual therapy interventions can improve self-esteem, perception, tactile acuity, and pain-related distress in patients with chronic low back pain and whether they are associated with a reduction in pain intensity and disability. Thus, this project’s main objective is to evaluate pain-related suffering, altered self-perception of the back, and tactile acuity in Portuguese patients with chronic low back pain.

PI: Renata Willig

In physical education, teachers strive to include people with disabilities, although there are still challenges to effective inclusion. Inclusive and adapted strategies are needed to improve the insertion of physical activities for people with disabilities in the community, addressing gaps in the literature and fostering the development and inclusion of physical literacy among this population. The objective is to analyze the physical literacy of people with disabilities focusing on inclusion, accessibility, health, and quality of life.

EquiSPACE is a project supported by IPDJ, which aims to enable families and schools to create environments that promote the integral development of children, with a strong emphasis on physical literacy. This project aims to broaden the understanding of the contexts in which children develop, including home, school, and extracurricular activities, and how these contexts influence their levels of motor competence, communicative competence, cognitive and motor development, acquisition of motor and physical skills, and activity levels).

PI: Beatriz Minghelli

This project aims to determine the epidemiology of injuries in athletes from various sports and to analyze the associated determinants. To date, there have been few epidemiological studies on some sports that have gained many practitioners around the world. This type of study aims to help develop injury prevention strategies during specific training sessions and also to promote improved athlete performance.

PI: Fernando Vieira

Trying to understand the lack of congruence between what is prescribed in the Curriculum Programs and the insufficient levels of PA provided in PE classes, should be considered important in improving the quality of teaching, in an era of great assertiveness about the contribution that schools and PE should make to public health and the promotion of an active lifestyle in children and young people. The aim of this project is to understand the curriculum that is provided to students in schools in different regions of the country and how the Operational Curriculum is related to the educational guidelines shared by Physical Education teachers.

PI: Paula Rodrigues; Funding: €5k, IPDJ

The aim of this project is to find out whether Walking Football and Portuguese Traditional and Popular Dances for seniors, organized in the form of programs adapted to the elderly and practiced on a regular and controlled basis, can contribute to the personal development and well-being of Portuguese seniors, improving their physical and psychological quality of life. The effect of gender, age, previous sports practice and the level of intensity of the two activities will also be assessed.
